Background
The latest Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS 2022) shows that Bangladesh faces a triple burden of malnutrition. Although stunting among children under five has declined from 31% in 2017–18 (very high) to 24% in 2022, it remains in the WHO’s “high” prevalence category. Wasting, however, has increased from 8% in 2017–18 to 11% in 2022, placing it in the WHO’s “high” prevalence category, while underweight has remained relatively stagnant at 22% over the past five years. Meanwhile, overweight and obesity are increasing, alongside widespread micronutrient deficiencies. This nutrition burden is compounded by a rapidly increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Climate change, food-system vulnerabilities, and rapid urbanization further complicate Bangladesh’s nutrition landscape.
Globally, nutrition science is advancing rapidly, from molecular and biochemical research to food systems innovation and digital surveillance. Bangladesh must harness these developments to forecast future challenges, strengthen resilience, and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
